Three Weeks Later

“My mother knows.”

Ophelia sipped delicately at her tea, “you mean about us.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She knows me well, better than my father and that is because his attention is mainly on business or my brother. Wait until he finds out I have beat Cameron at the marriage game.”

Ophelia narrowed her eyes at her husband. “Marriage is not a game, Alistair, it is serious. I do not wish to be treated as if I am some sort of prize.”

“Never would I think that.”

“When will you introduce me to your family?”

“We could go today; my mother and father are still in York.”

“No, that might not be a good idea,” Ophelia said, “I was thinking, what if they take umbrage and decide to cut you off, how would we manage?”

“I don’t think my father would go to those extremes, I doubt whether my mother would let him.”

“We cannot take that chance, you must continue to act as if there is nothing wrong and then once you get your inheritance through, you can tell them.”

“Very well, if that is what you wish for, although it would be nice if you told me the money did not matter and you married me because you loved me.”

Ophelia turned to her husband, “I do love you, how could you doubt it? Do I not show you every time we make love? But we also have to be practical, we need money to live on and besides what if I am with child, I am late, the first time ever. What would we live on if we had a child to support.”

“Oh, my love, I am sorry,” Alistair marvelled at the way his wife always seemed to make him feel guilty.

“Perhaps you should visit the doctor, I shall go with you.”

Ophelia panicked, “no, I will go in due course but right now I am more concerned with our welfare. If your father did disown you, is there any employment you are capable of?”

“I could get a position as an agent to an estate, I have learned much about the running of my own estate and I am sure I could secure a position, if we were to tell my father about our marriage before the 18th of September.”

“No, it is out of the question, Alistair. You are entitled to your due and I will not be the one held responsible for you losing it, you might not resent be at the beginning but I am sure in time you would. And what of our children? Would you see them lose their inheritance?”

“Of course not.”

“Then let us hear no more of it.”

“Very well,” Alistair said, suddenly having a need to know she loved him for himself but the only way he could ever know that was to go and see his father and tell him he had married and whose daughter she was, and then it wold be left to fate, and he would know it was love on her part, he knew how he felt, he could quite easily live on a salary from what an agent might earn.
